Wrongly accused Nigerian girl for drug peddling in Saudi Arabia, Zainab Aliyu (middle), with officials of Nigerian Consulate in Jedda, shortly after her release…yesterday.
Lawyers under the aegis of Legal Advocacy Response to Drugs Initiative (LARDI) have urged the Federal Government to intervene and save Nigerians on death row in foreign countries.
The group, however, commended the Federal Government for its intervention that saved the lives of Zainab Aliyu and Ibrahim Abubakar, who were accused of drug peddling in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement issued yesterday by LARDI’s National Coordinator and Secretary/Head of Publicity, Chinelo Uchendu and Emeka Nwadioke, it also applauded the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for busting the alleged criminal gang that specialises in planting drugs on air passengers’ bags.
It, however, stressed that the government should begin the process of a more detailed inquest to save innocent Nigerians on death rows abroad.
The group commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his intervention to free Zainab and Abubakar.
“We commend Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyema; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Affairs, Abike Dabiri-Erewa and NDLEA for their roles in the matter,” it added.
